Cognitive Flexibility: The Decision-Making Skill That Helps You Change Your Mind
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to adjust your thinking or behavior when circumstances change.
In decision-making, that means being able to recognize when the information, assumptions, or strategy you started with no longer fit the situation. That sounds simple. It is not.
Our brains are very good at using past experience to make sense of the present. Usually, that is useful. It allows us to recognize patterns and make decisions without starting from scratch every time. The problem comes when the environment changes but our thinking does not.
Researchers generally consider cognitive flexibility an important part of executive function. It involves shifting between rules, strategies, goals, or perspectives as circumstances change. It also relies on other processes, including attention, working memory, and inhibition.
Why It Matters for Decision-Making
Imagine you have made an investment, hired someone, launched a strategy, or committed your organization to a particular direction. Then new information appears.
The question is no longer simply, “Was my original decision reasonable?”
The more important question becomes: “Does the evidence still support it?”
This is where cognitive flexibility matters.
A cognitively flexible decision-maker can:
Consider new information without automatically rejecting it
Change strategies when conditions change
Consider alternative explanations
Recognize when a previously successful approach is no longer working
Update a decision without treating a change of mind as a failure
Cognitive flexibility does not mean changing your mind constantly. It means knowing when the evidence is strong enough that you should.
A Simple Question to Ask
Before making or revisiting an important decision, ask: What would I need to know for me to change my mind?
If the answer is “nothing,” you are not evaluating the decision, you are defending it.
